You Aussies can start smiling again

The Gold Coast's Indy car race has been axed after the Queensland government and race bosses failed to reach an agreement on the event's future.

However, a motor racing carnival will still be held on the streets of Surfers Paradise next October, featuring V8 Supercars and a new event - the A1 Grand Prix series.

So it looks like you will be getting your race back for Season 5.

To greg21 and all other motorsports fans out there worring about the V8's in Australia taking centre stage at this race! There will be no contest as Holden will come through once again next year . Then it will be A1GP equal first with the Holdens on pole, as things should rightly be. Morris Minors on second equal to the Grid Girls. No offence to grid girls! VW's on third with no offence to Ford. And Ford will be running in last place as they watch the cow's come home. Sorry people, I did not mean to offend the cows.

Re: You Aussies can start smiling again

Let me start by saying that A1 GP should have been launched originally in unison with Champcar/Indy Car series or better still instead of them. An international series is more appropriate than an overseas series that you hardly hear boo about except prior to Indy. The bulk of the spectators are and will be for the V8 Supercars, but at least there will be a Team Australia interest with the new Ferrari package in the "boot".

Besides for Will Power and Ryan Briscoe could you name two other INDY drivers, probably not.

For the A1 series to appear on the Gold Coast, it will no doubt grow it's appeal to the masses in Oz, if as is speculated that F1 may scrap Melbourne then it will have to be THE open wheeler event on the calendar before too long.

Everyone likes to see McLaren,BMW SAUBA and FERRARI to win of course, but talent speaks more than unlimited budgets for winning performances.

Team Aus all have the talent - now will be their opportunity again in season 5 to showcase them on a BETTER track than Eastern Creek. The organisers may actually be surprised at the genuine appeal of the racing when you have a venue that attracts spectators as is the case at Surfers.

Thats enough for now, as you could pick by my tone-----I'm smiling to have heard of A1's inclusion.

We have a race at Surfers for at least 5 years! Couple that with a deal for 2 races in China for the next 5 years, Lippo Village for 4 more years at least, a race in the Netherlands and South Africa both for next season, you start to have a mega looking calendar!

As the Tourism minister in Mexico is supportive as well I guess that is a multi-year deal, I hope so anyway.

Re: You Aussies can start smiling again

A mega calendar! Yeah I think the ministers/governers or anyone playing a role in the government that supports A1, will want to have a race in their country. Go Monterry! Its a really nice track!

Re: You Aussies can start smiling again

All Circuits originally had a contract for 3 season.

Brno was dropped after its second race and Estoril, Lasitz and Laguna Seca were all dropped after their 1 and only race. Sentul was dropped for other mitigating circumstances and Mexico's venue as changed so a new contract ensued.

Mexico City's contract along with Zandvoort expires season 4.

We know that Zandvoort have renewed for at least 1 year (Season 5) and Brands have renewed their contract for this season at least. Sepang have renewed for the long run (unknown length) China have 2 races for next 5 seasons (Season 5-10) Lippo Village is confirmed until Season 9 and Surfers Paradise until Season 10. Algarve was a 3 year deal.

Kyalami is on a long contract too I believe, whilst Brazil is a complete unknown and Taupo's contract expires after January's race.
